'NZ Treasures – 20 Cent Coin'
The Story behind the Artwork
The 20 cent coin is probably the most common coin used in the 80’s and 90’s, this coin went far at the dairy and spacey parlour.
The original coin design was iconic, two great native species on one coin, the Kiwi and Punga. For this artwork I wanted to bring alive the kiwi’s natural bush habitat but still keep it similar to the original design. As much as I love the design by James Berry, I wanted to include more Punga’s and change the pose to the Kiwi digging around the bush floor laden with old Punga debri, sticks and dry leaves searching for snacks.
This is the fifth artwork in the ‘NZ treasures coin series’ and there will be six in total of the old NZ coins - 1c, 2c, 5c, 10c 20c and 50c.
