'NZ Treasures – One Penny'
The Third artwork in the Pre-decimal NZ Treasure Series, the beloved One Penny coin. Quite a large coin that could buy plenty back in the 50’s and 60’s, now a musty have for NZ coin collectors.
The Story behind the Artwork
For this artwork I wanted the Tui to be the main focus, the hero of this piece. The Tui has such an amazing plumage, the shimmering feathers and tuft under the throat (poi) are distinctive to the Tui and are what makes this bird a favourite of Kiwi’s along with their bird calls. The kowhai were painted with less detail purposely for the Tui to sing in this painting.
