'Golden Dawn Kōwhai'
The Story behind the Artwork
It was long overdue for me to Kōwhai and my Pohutukawa artwork needed a friend. A piece I have put off for a while, as silly as it sounds, I’m not a fan of yellow and I love to add extra colour to my paintings. With this one it was not the case, I had to choose my colour palette carefully and not go crazy with colour.
Painting a Kōwhai can be very challenging and there is a balancing act with the yellow, not adding enough colour to the flower, it appears flat, adding too much yellow and shading it loses its character and can appear muddy.
I'm very happy with the outcome. What do you think?
Original painted with watercolour and pencil on cold press watercolour paper.
